Detail Itinerary: Day 1: Haiphong City/Vinh Bao District (L, G) After breakfast, you will visit the Garden theatre, Du Hang Pagoda and Kenh Temple. Then you will be drivern to Dong Minh Village where you’ll spend the day with the villagers. First, you’ll visit the village temple to investigate its underground stream and an unusual ‘mobile’ statue created by local artisans. Next, a visit to some of the village houses to watch the process of manufacturing votive effigies from jackfruit wood and join local people to help with making ‘sky lights’ and releasing them. If you wish, you can try your hand at working with the peasants to harvest or plant rice in their fields. After a picnic lunch, a short drive takes you to a temple where a mysterious Vietnamese historical scholar is worshipped. From there, another trip to a neighbouring village provides an opportunity to see a traditional communal house and enjoy water puppetry performed by the villagers – the real thing, not the tourist version. You’ll be able to wander around the village and visit traditional ‘family worship houses’. The traditional Water Puppetry performance will take place in a small pond in front of the village’s Communal House, a popular vernacular tradition spanning many centuries. It’s an art form unique to northern Vietnam. It will lack the stylish presentation and advanced skills of the performers in Hanoi’s purpose-built water puppet theatre, but makes up for its amateur status by enthusiasm and originality.
